What I love about this author’s books (so far) is how much the setting is a part of the story. It’s clear she did a lot of research on Australian and lifeguarding, and as in Honeymoon for One, it really enhances the story.This is the story of 34 year old Liam, veteran lifeguard and formed Aussie rules football star, who is DEEPLY closeted, and 20 year old Cody, trainee lifeguard originally from Canada who is out and not bothered by people knowing it.Liam has an excessive amount of internalized homophobia and while that can be annoying in a character, I was okay with it here. He’s a deeply sensitive man who unfortunately demonstrated athletic ability as a boy and was shoved into the very macho world of Aussie football, which combined with his virulently homophobic father just broke him. There’s a significant age difference that didn’t matter at all because Liam’s development had been so thwarted that he was a mess, while Cody was calm, patient, caring, a strong communicator and caretaker- Cody was definitely the dominant/strong one in their relationship (and I’m not talking sexually, although that dynamic was also handled really well- I don’t like BDSM, but this was more emotional healing/release than a D/s relationship).While this all sounds heavy, it isn’t. The book reads “light” and there’s plenty of sexy times. This is a basically terrific slow-building romance with two very well developed characters but one pretty annoying pattern: There are simply too many scenes of rescue and recovery situations on the beach where the lifeguards and public risk their lives. There could have been fewer, but my supposition is that they are there because the MC, Liam (the hunk on the left on the cover) has been in the closet so long that it takes all that time for him to even acknowledge there could be a one-off or even a little more with new recruit Cody, who is not only about half his age but also in a totally different world of acceptance of his sexuality than is Liam.Otherwise, this is a pretty good book, well written as are all of Ms. Andrews' works, and with a steady build up of passion and regret, enthusiasm and anxiety, and dirty little things that come as big surprises. The biggest surprise of all is how dominant Cody is as a sexual partner when the two of them eventually hook up, and how supple and deeply submissive Liam turns out to be. Don't get me wrong--this is not a deep BDSM trip, it's really a personality clash that melds when the board shorts come off and it's totally unique in many ways.There is a lot of Australian lingo here and a superb supporting cast of lifeguards, friends and family, as well as the usual angst that a deeply closeted late 30s Australian football legend would likely go through if he were trying to sort his sexuality out without destroying himself, his lover, his legend or his not-a-clue family.In the end Ms. Andrews comes through splendidly, but there could have been a few less days at the beach.
